Zum Frühjahr 1969 wollten die Doors zu einer ersten großen Tournee durch die Vereinigten Staaten aufbrechen. Zum ersten Konzert in Miami reiste Morrison aus Kalifornien an, wo er gerade mehrere Aufführungen der kontroversen New Yorker Theatergruppe Living Theatre an der University of Southern California besucht hatte. Noch unter dem Eindruck der Theater-Performances stehend und über Manipulationen des lokalen Konzertveranstalters beim Ticketverkauf aufgebracht, versuchte Morrison bei dem Konzert am 1. März 1969 im „Dinner Key Auditorium“ in Miami, Aufruhr unter den 13.000 Konzertbesuchern zu stiften („There are no rules! […] Let’s see some action out there. […] You wanna see my cock, don’t you?“).[48] Außerdem simulierte er an Kriegers Gitarre kniend Fellatio. Unter dem von Morrison provozierten Ansturm des Publikums brach die unzulängliche Bühne des „Auditorium“ zusammen.
